Necessary Equipment To Sand Furniture

Steps To Sand Furniture

Below, you will find out the proper steps that you need to follow to sand wood furniture.

Step 1: Use the Wood Filler

Before you start sanding, check the whole furniture to find out any cracks or uneven areas. If you can find it out, fill these areas with the wood filler. Fill it up in a way that the cracks or holes are not visible anymore. Then, let it dry for at least a day or two.

Step 2: Use the Palm Sander

The palm sander is very efficient when it comes to sanding. You can use it easily, and it is very safe to use along with that. Before you turn on the power, wear the protective woodworking eye glass and dust mask first. This will make sure your eyes and lungs are well protected throughout the whole process.

Accordingly, take the sandpaper and attach it on the bottom of the palm sander. Use the lower grit number of sandpaper as the lower number provides the rougher sandpaper. Join the sandpaper in the machine with the help of Velcro (a fastener used to attach items). Now, you can sand the wood surface gently.

Move it in a circular motion constantly so that the entire irregular shaped areas gets smoother. If there are any additional wood fillers left behind from the time it got dried, sand those places also. Do the whole process gently; otherwise, the surface will be rough or might leave some sanding marks in the end.

For the flat surfaces, sand the area properly, and carefully sand the corners. Don’t sand the corners too much; otherwise, you might end up with a round corner. So, make sure you sand in a way that all the rough edges are removed successfully.

Step 3: Finishing Touch

After you are done with the tough part, you now can do the finishing touch without hesitation. Replace the rough sandpaper with the smoother one. The smoother one will have a higher grit number. You can choose the sandpaper from 250 to 320 grit number according to your preference.

Attach it on the bottom of the palm sander again, and in this case, you have to sand it in the direction of the grain of the wood. Make sure the entire wood gets a smooth surface so that you can do the painting with ease.

Now, you can take the vacuum cleaner and clean the whole area to remove any dust present. Pick the damp rag and sweep the furniture gently. Your furniture is now ready to be painted.

Hope you got all the necessary information that you were looking for from this article. Sanding furniture before paint is quite an easy task if you know all the techniques beforehand. When you are doing this work, make sure the kids are out of reach. Try to do it in an open private space or your garage.
